Long awaited by contestants, the Mr World 2007 Sports Challenge is the ultimate test of strength, stamina and determination. Not only did it sort the men from the boys, this is was of the most high profile challenges in the quest for the most desirable man in the world. The guys had to sweat it out on the white sandy beaches and in the South China Sea, first in a punishing, individual endurance test, after which the four top performers from each team went head to head in some of the toughest team trials. Individual endurance tests To make the mark and have a chance to go through to the team trials, each contestant had to complete a gruelling circuit containing five of the toughest trials testing both explosive power and endurance: step ups, press ups, leg raises, sit ups, and burpees. Malta, a professional footballer for his national team, came top. He said: This is not just about explosive power; you need both strength and endurance to win. The top three, Dominican Republic, South Africa and me, we all three excel in sports that train both. The four top contestants from each team were then short listed to progress to the team trials: Team trials The team trials added an extra element for contestants: apart from strength and stamina, they were also challenged to work as a team. The first trial, sea kayaking, would test the teams to the very limit, as the sea that day was rough and the wind strong. After only a short break to catch breath and take some water, the guys then had to fight it out in a tug of war but with a twist, as they had to stand in the sea up to their middle. Only the strongest men are fit enough for this, as you are not just fighting the other team, but also the waves lashing the shore, and the strong sideway current. The third and final test, a 4x 200m running race whereby contestants had to carry no less than four coconuts, completed the team trials. As they came last in the tug of war, the Tigers were keen to show the other teams what they were made of.
